Field positions and roles

On this page, I explain the main positions in volleyball and the role of each player on the court. The goal is to help understand how a team is organized and how each player profile finds its place. There are 6 positions in volleyball: the setter, the libero, the middle blockers, and the hitters.

The setter

The setter is the true playmaker of the team. They run the offense by deciding which attacker to set, depending on the quality of the reception, the opponent’s block, and the match situation. They need excellent game vision and very precise setting skills.

The libero

The libero is a defensive and reception specialist, identifiable by a different-colored jersey. They are not allowed to attack or serve in most competitions, but they are essential for stabilizing reception and saving difficult balls in defense.

Middle blockers

Middle blockers are players who act quickly at the net, both in blocking and quick attacks. They must be explosive, anticipate the game, and jump quickly to block opposing attackers.s

Hitters

Outside hitters (left side hitters) and opposite hitters (right side hitters) are the team’s main scorers. Outside hitters must both receive well and attack, while the opposite hitter is often the backup solution in case of a poor reception, as they receive many sets in attack.
